Beth is strong, sharp, present, and seems to think everything is entirely normal until Zach informs her that she's dead. Her mental faculties seem intact, which is not at all common with zombie movies, and beyond that, she's coordinated. From there, there's a slow decline that is more mental than physical where Beth starts to exhibit extreme arousal, rage, irritation, and exhibits increasingly erratic and disturbing behavior. Beth is almost entirely normal at first she's so normal that Zach doesn't even believe she's really dead. When it does happen, the "apocalypse" part of the movie, while present, is short-lived.īeyond that, the way zombies function is different. It isn't until nearly the end of the movie when it's discovered that others-such as Zach's grandfather-have come back as well. Other zombie movies focus on the event that leads to zombies starting to overrun a city or even the entire world, but Life After Beth focuses more on the singular family, on one instance of zombies coming back to life, rather than looking at the big picture.
Truly, one of the best decisions the movie makes is to leave the reason why she-and others-have come back from the dead a mystery. While voodoo traditions have been an impetus for zombie lore in the past, it's not the case in Life After Beth.
Life After Beth: How Did Beth Actually Die? Even so, Life After Beth looked beyond that by cleverly changing the overall atmosphere and the setting. Many more recent films, such as Shaun of the Deadand 2019's Hulu original movie, Little Monsters, embrace the funnier aspects of corpses rising from their grave. The ambling, brain-devouring creatures just aren't scary anymore.
